What is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis can best be described as a state of profound physical and mental relaxation, during which we become inwardly focused, aware of our immediate reality but with a comfortable sense of detachment from it: a wonderful, calm and relaxed state.

You are fully awake and alert whilst in hypnosis, and NOT under anyones power or influence – regardless of what you may have seen on television!

Nearly all of us have experienced a trance-like state many times. Have you ever caught yourself daydreaming and not noticed things happening around you? Or you may have been driving or on a train journey and missed your exit or stop. These trance-like states are just self hypnosis.

Hypnosis per se doesn’t actually achieve anything: it’s what happens when you are in that relaxed state that creates the effective results…..

Suggestion Hypnotherapy (Clinical Hypnosis)

Hypnotherapy involves the use of psychotherapy or other therapeutic techniques in association with hypnosis, in order to create positive change. It is a natural, effective way of making contact with the ‘subconscious self’, utilizing the power of your imagination to create positive change.

You are relaxed into a very nice, calm, relaxed state, and while you are in that state, you are given suggestions that your symptoms will disappear. It is successful because it works with the client’s own willpower, by making strong, positive suggestions about whatever the client would like to become or achieve.

Suggestion Therapy is used for easy-to-control, less complex problems, such as smoking, nail-biting, pre-test nerves, relaxation, confidence boosting, performance improvement, etc.

Please note that I always accompany suggestion therapy sessions with fundemental areas of the Thrive Programme to give you additional insight and control over your issue. Suggestion therapy usually only requires between two and three sessions.

Questions and Answers about Hypnotherapy

How long does each session last?

Allow 90 minutes for the first session. Subsequent sessions are approximately 75 mins.

I’ve seen stage performers doing hypnosis – will I end up doing silly things?

Volunteers for stage performances are hand picked and are generally the types of people that would be outrageous in normal life. You cannot and will not be made to do anything that would be against your will. Similarly, you will not say anything in hypnosis that you would not normally wish to reveal. Although you are relaxed, you are still in complete control.

What does hypnosis feel like?

It is a pleasantly relaxing state, rather like a pleasant daydream. You are conscious of your surroundings and aware of everything that is happening throughout the session. The brain wave patterns of people in hypnosis show alert wakefulness.

Can I be hypnotised?

Anyone can experience hypnosis unless they are unwilling to do so, are incapable of any degree of concentration or are under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Can I get ‘stuck’ in hypnosis?

Never. You can come out of hypnosis any time.
